At Picton School, we are committed to providing a rich, local curriculum that is woven into our literacy and numeracy teaching.
Phase 1 (Years 0-3): Reading books will be sent home each night, along with a BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) information sheet each week to support your child’s learning.
Phase 2 (Years 4-6): Ākonga will have access to library books and classroom novels to encourage more reading, we encourage you to read with them, ask them about what they're reading, and make time to go to the public library together.
Spelling: This will be a key part of our literacy programme within the classroom.
Math: We teach math for an hour each day, but we will not be sending home extra work. Instead, we encourage whānau to incorporate real-life Maths into daily activities such as:
We also encourage tamariki to get involved in activities outside of the classroom to help with their development, such as joining a sports group, learning a musical instrument, or engaging in imaginative play. Thanks to our Parent Fundraising Group we will again this year be able to subsidise the cost of team sports for our tamariki.
